Half-Life fans, it’s time to regain your hopes as one of the industry insiders, Tyler McVicker, has revealed new info regarding HLX (codenamed Half-Life 3). Discovered in the recent Dota 2 update, it seems like the game could be in its final stages of development.
HLX (Codenamed Half-Life 3) Files Discovered In Dota 2 Update
According to the video (Information starts at 2:40 timestamp), Valve recently worked on optimizing the AI for HLX. Tyler also notes that Valve has historically abandoned projects at the start of a new year. However, HLX wasn’t abandoned and is still being actively worked on in 2025.
Another thing to note is that the optimization phase in game development occurs at the end of the development cycle (as mentioned in the 3:25 timestamp). This could also indicate that we may see some official announcements this year.
Tyler is not the only one who has given updates regarding HLX. Gabe Follower, a well-known Valve insider, revealed that HLX reached a point where it was being playtested inside Valve. This further highlights that the development phase could be almost complete.
Michael Shapiro (voice actor of G-Man) shared a cryptic video at the start of this year, teasing “unexpected surprises” and closing the message with “see you… in the new year” while transitioning to his G-Man voice. Given how many teases we’ve been getting from insiders and even the voice of G-Man himself, Half-Life 3 could be closer than we think.
Most importantly, while this new information does seem optimistic, it’s still important to take it with a grain of salt until we get official information from Valve or even Gabe Newell himself. The man himself emphasized why delaying the first Half-Life was so important, so we could only assume the team is taking all the time they can to give us a masterpiece.
