For gaming enthusiasts, learning about a rare prototype console or even an unreleased game is like discovering a hidden treasure on an unknown island. What’s even more amazing is getting your hands on one of those prototypes and showcasing it to the world. Such is the case with the recent discovery of the New Nintendo 3DS X4 and X5 prototypes showcased by Reddit user moreretrograde.

For those in doubt, moreretrograde has confirmed that these are legitimate prototypes of the New Nintendo 3DS. In addition, unlike the retail version, the X4 and X5 feature lower-quality plastic shells, lack a kisekae plate slot and have unique design elements like a flat gray IR sensor on the X4 and no home button.
However, these prototypes don’t have motherboards and almost all of them were destroyed. More info regarding these prototypes has also been uploaded to Consolevariations. You can check out more images of X4 and X5 prototypes here.

Apart from the prototypes, moreretrograde has also acquired an unreleased prototype game for the Nintendo DS which the user claims is undocumented online and is in the hands of a preservationist. Also, the footage will be uploaded to the MORetro YouTube channel, and I hope to see the prototypes in action soon.
These prototypes highlight the iterative nature of console development, showcasing early design choices that were later refined for the final product. Thanks to dedicated collectors like moreretrograde, these pieces of gaming history are preserved for future generations to appreciate.
