Some avid GTA fans have addressed their concerns over the GTA 6 trailer and how it will end up being disappointing. However, despite all these concerns, the single factor that GTA 6 needs to pay attention to is its story mode.
- Fans have expressed disappointment over GTA 6 not making leaps and bounds for a next-gen experience.
- GTA 5’s story mode was exceptional and thus remains memorable even ten years later.
- GTA 6’s story mode will follow two main characters, Lucia and Jason, and there needs to be excellent chemistry between the plot and characters to leave a mark.
Concerns Over The Next-Gen Experience
The Grand Theft Auto series has always been reclaimed as the point where next-gen gaming truly began. If we see the evolution of the GTA series from San Andreas and Vice City all the way up to GTA 4 and GTA 5, we can obviously see the improvements in all aspects. However, GTA 6 seems to fall short of the expected graphical progress.
Fans have addressed their disappointment over the lack of truly cutting-edge graphics in GTA 6 and how they don’t really feel next-gen and more like a modded version of GTA 5 using NaturalVision Evolved. However, I think this concern is blown out of proportion, and the graphics are a decent improvement over GTA 5.
Moreover, the true next-gen experience would come from fascinating new features in gameplay, such as freely exploring every single building in GTA 6 without loading screens. Furthermore, if every building were carefully built and had its unique NPCs and atmosphere, then it would truly feel like every place in GTA 6 was full of splendor and would be awesome to explore.
How Great Is GTA 5’s Story Mode?
GTA 5 was nothing exceptional in terms of plot. It was just a group of 3 guys being coerced by their situations into doing dumb things and getting the appropriate response. However, what tied everything together was the characters and their interactions, making the Story Mode truly memorable and iconic.
We all love Michael, Trevor, and Franklin despite all their flawed character because when they’re together in the world of GTA 5, they make each experience more memorable, and their dialogue and interactions with each other and other NPCs in the world make for a very entertaining Story.
We all remember the awkward but funny interactions when Michael called Trevor a hipster when they both were in the car, the time when Trevor kidnapped the wife of some Drug Kingpin, and when Lamar roasts Franklin for not letting him inside his house. These instances ended up becoming memes you’d share amongst friends.
I’ve completed the GTA 5 Story Mode several times and always feel a void after ending such a great experience. There’s no intricate plot or writing, but with the characters, world-building, and situations, we get a very fun story to experience. Sadly, we’re not getting these same characters in GTA 6, but what are we getting instead?
Why GTA 6 Needs To Nail The Story Mode
From the Trailer, it seems GTA 6 will follow two main characters, Lucia and Jason. Of course, there will probably be other characters with important roles, such as the case in GTA 5 with Lester, Lamar, and Wade. Moreover, Lucia is the first-ever female GTA protagonist, so it will be interesting to see how Rockstar handles her character.
On the other hand, there’s Jason, and he seems to be Lucia’s romantic interest, but there isn’t anything more detailed about him. There’s very little we know about either character. Hence, it’s hard to say where the story is going, but looking at the rest of the Trailer, the setting is just insane enough to create a lot of potentially great and memorable situations.
We know that Lucia is on parole, so it will be funny to see her getting roped into criminally offensive situations, somewhat like Gregory House from House is with the whole Ankle Monitor Arc. However, it’s hard to gauge what the personality of each character from the Trailer is like. I think both Lucia and Jason will be more similar to Franklin, as in they’re more sane.
I doubt we’ll see anything surreal from Lucia and Jason like we did in GTA 5 with Michael breaking down a guy’s house for sleeping with his wife or Trevor being… well, Trevor. However, I hope I’m wrong and that we get to see more fun sides of their personalities in future trailers. It would be very dull to see Lucia and Jason living boring, standard criminal lives and the story being too woke.
Moreover, there have been a lot of staff changes at Rockstar, and the company seems to be moving in a more culturally sensitive way and getting rid of the frat-boy culture at the office. In fact, this isn’t a bad thing. Who would want people in real life to act like characters like GTA? However, this could mean less dark humor and possibly boring writing in GTA 6.
However, in the end, it’s GTA and Rockstar, and even from GTA 5 radios or the GTA 5 Cinema, there was plenty of fun dialogue and scripts, so I have great hope in GTA 6, equaling that, if not better than it. GTA has always been about getting 5 Wanted Stars and killing hundreds of civilians and cops, but we remember the story first and the massacre second.
My Final Thoughts
The title said something about saving GTA 6, but let’s be honest: GTA 6 will most likely be the greatest-selling video game of all time, even if it ends up not being exceptional. The core GTA experience is good enough, even if the story doesn’t live up to it. It will be okay. However, it will be way less memorable and drive less nostalgia.
When Music from GTA 5 plays, we immediately think of the entire GTA 5 story, our experiences, the laughs, and the frustrations, and it will forever be a core memory of ours. So, if GTA 6 doesn’t ignite the same kind of fun storytelling and has boring characters, I doubt it will be anything like a core memory, even with its sales.
